Reference checks for NSW health new grad program

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone knows how these are done? I mean, we interviewed at our first preference hospital, but do they only contact our referees if they want us (i.e. if we scored high enough in the interviews)? Or do the hospitals call the referees of everyone that they interviewed? I'm just very curious to know, because I had an interview at one of the private hospitals, and they said they only call your referees if they're interested in you; just wondering if this is how the public hospitals do it as well.

If anyone has any insight to this, please share :)

Thank you Ceridwyn :) *Fingers crossed*

I'm a new grad in NSW who applied to both the public and private sectors.

The private hospital, which offered me a job, checked my referees. The public hospital, who also gave me one of the very limited jobs available at this hospital, did not check my referees by phoning them.
