Graduate nurse wanting to work in the USA

Hello everyone,

I am currently a graduate nurse and I have a question for Australian-trained nurses that have successfully worked as RN's in the USA. The current visa system is quite favourable to educated Australians wanting to work in the US, so what I would really like is some information on whether or not the Bachelor of Nursing was sufficient for working as an RN in the US and if not, how did you become suitably qualified? Also, how did you find the NCLEX?

As much information as you can give me is very appreciated as I have read so many conflicting stories.

Thank you,

Tegan

If you check out the Nurse Registration forum there are mixed replies. Basically you need to make sure your transcript shows both clinical and theory hours in Paeds, Mental Health, Obstetrics and Adult

Thank you for your reply! Yes, I understand that but there seems to be different circumstances depending on the state. I was hoping that an Australian-trained nurse could tell me what their experiences have been and how exactly they have met the clinical and theory criteria if their Australian qualifications were insufficient or which States they have been able to find employment without further training.

If you do not have clinical and theory hours in the areas I mentioned you will not meet any state's requirements. I think a few have posted difficulty in Australia in making hours up. US will be hard as well as many IEN's that have had to make hours have really struggled to find schools willing for students just to do certain things and not the whole program

You will need to contact whichever state you are wanting to work in as each one has different regulations. As someone stated before your transcript will also have to reflect a certain amount to sit for nclex. There is a school in Boston that is helpful with training foreign nurses. As far as nclex Kaplan works great as well as Hurst review. Good Luck!!

Hello and thank you for your response. Do you know what the school in Boston is by any chance so that I can get in touch with them?
