Let Go - How to Fill Out New Apps

Hi Nurse Beth,

I recently resigned from my position because I was facing termination because of too many write-ups.The write-ups were for things I needed to learn and NOT life-threatening mistakes.I received a lot of good feedback from my patients and 95% of them asked to have me back next shift. I'm starting to apply for positions and am stumped what I should put on applications under " Reason for leaving". I'm a very honest person and want to put the best response.

Dear Resigned,

Put "seeking new opportunity".

If asked about your short tenure during an interview, you can say that it wasn't a good fit and that you are looking to put your skills to work for an organization that better aligns with your values. You can be honest without using negatively loaded words such as terminated” and write-ups”.

You were smart to see the writing on the wall and to resign before you were terminated. Your patients like you, and that says a lot about you.

Just be sure you are not missing an opportunity to receive and reflect upon constructive feedback. Receiving several write-ups is not the norm. Rarely is a situation like the one you describe 100% one-sided.

Thanks Beth for the advice and I appreciate your honesty. My experience was not one-sided and I have learned alot from this experience and I believe it will make me a better RN. I recently landed a good job and will start my position soon.
