The five articles in this latest issue of Online Journal of Issues in Nursing (OJIN) present historical reviews of the events of September 11 and its aftermath, the struggles that health care personnel and professional organizations have faced when dealing with mass-casualties, and recommendations regarding disaster preparedness for the future.

Newest OJIN Issue:

"One Year Later: The Impact and Aftermath of September 11"

Dr. Woods, in the introduction to this latest edition, writes: "The morificecripts in this volume present historical reviews of the events of September 11 and its aftermath, the struggles that health care personnel and professional organizations have faced when dealing with mass-casualties, and recommendations regarding disaster preparedness for the future."

Dr. Jameson draws on the experiences of the victims, the rescuers, and the survivors in a chilling historical and statistical overview of the events of 9/11.

In the second and third articles, Ms. Orr and Dr. White provide insight into how professional organizations (the New York State Nurses Association and the American Psychiatric Nurses Association) responded to the tragic events and provide recommendations from lessons learned .

Dr. Berkowitz reviews the public health nursing role in bioterrorism preparedness in the aftermath of September 11th and addresses the skills and competencies that will prepare public health nurses in their planning for and response to threats of bioterrorism.

The final article by Dr. Riba and Ms. Reches describes discussions with emergency room nurses who care for victims of terror, and provides recommendations for policy enhancement based upon these discussions. This article provides a very powerful description of Israeli nurses' reactions to living in a country where terrorism is "routine".
