Do you have AS or USpA?

Nurses Disabilities

If so, how do you manage your symptoms and work? I am 31 years old, have AS and work 8 hr shifts where I'm on my feet almost all the time. Typically I do feel a little better the next day since I was so active at work, however while I am at work I'm extremely miserable. I can't wait to get home and take my pain meds so I can get some relief. I love being a floor nurse and do not believe I would be happy in a more administrative position. I just haven't figured out a balance yet for working days and my disease. How do you cope?

Specializes in Care Coordination, MDS, med-surg, Peds.

I have RA and osteoarthritis and have really bad knees and ankles/feet.

I had to give up on floor nursing after 20+ years and moved to Care Coordination, and I love it.

When I worked, I took the pain meds as needed, but only non-narcotic ones like ultram, which I can't take any more, if I want to sleep!! Also good, supportive shoes. You might look into custom orthotics. Rest when you can.

Can you break up your work schedule so you are working 1-2 days on and 1-2 days off? Or go Per Diem, then you can schedule your shifts to suit your body the best.

Make sure you rest on your days off, too and get good sleep every night.

I think that nursing is incredibly hard on a body and a body with autoimmune problems can really suffer while working. There are many types of nursing that aren't as tough on the old body that you might look into.

Keep fighting the battle and stay strong!!!
