i grew up with a alcoholic father , who made very good money and he drank all the money away. i grew up in a mansion , but we had no food. i never started drinking and luckily neither did my little sister and older brother. we lived a nightmare with my father. he was retired army ( came back from korea and viet nam w/ ptsd) and was very hard on us if we made a mistake. i have never told anyone the heck i went through with my father growing up. as far as my friends are concerned we lived a happy life in our huge mansion in saratoga springs NY. my dad still won't admit he has a drinking problem and still lives in the mansion.

the next year my mom kicked my dad out of the house and changed all the locks on our big house, eventually he got the house and we got the boot... which was fine with me. my mom lost a baby during this time and almost died in the hospital, but by the grace of God she made it. she worked as a nurse ( she was a nun before she got married and became a nurse) . and we barley made it.
i forgive my dad and speak to him alot. he emails me and sent my sister and i my grandmother's diamonds for christmas. he is in the process of selling the house and moving to the family house in another city in nY. i told him he was hero because of his braveness during the korean and viet nam war, he saw his friends killed and many young men die, his helicopters were shot down 3 times and he has 3 purple hearts. he was a helicopter pilot and flew chinooks and baby hueys'. i just had to forgive him and move on , because i really love him. it took me years to forgive him for the neglect and verbal abuse. all 3 of us kids did frogive dad. alcohol really does ruin lives and families, thats why i never picked up a drink in my life. my friends today don't even know the neglect and abuse i suffered as a child. it's in the pass and it feels good to move on. i see his life differently as an adlt.

well what i am trying to say , is i think you are all hero's to me. you faced your demons and conqurered them or in the process of conquering them... i love you all and i pray for you all nightly. you are hero's because you are able to admit your mistakes and grow from them.... some people never do.... i read all your stories and pray for you all.

Hello and thank you SO much for your kind words. My name is Anne and I am a nurse and an addict. I have been in recovery for 7 years and it is great to hear or see a positive attitude like yours towards us. I do wish more people felt like this.

    Thank you! Anne, RNC
