Can anyone give me some ideas for mini inservices.....What works best like 1 on 1 or little meetings at the beginning of shifts. I just want to do little mini inservices to help educate staff and i am unsure on how to go about it. Any help.....?

When I was head nurse, the staff used to have to get together once a day for about 10 minutes or so to discuss what was going on on the unit. I would use these times, as well as change of shift, to give mini inservices. That way I could get all staff on all 3 shifts.

Some topics I would go over were Policy and Procedure review, infection control, Foley care, Mouth care, Skin care....etc. Just things that could be gone over in 10 minutes or less. Obviously, this would not be the time to introduce a new product or policy, as you want to leave enough time for questions.

Also, if I noticed a trend on my unit (ie: increase in UTI's) I would review information pertaining to the trend. That way everyone was aware of what was occuring on our unit and what we could as a team to change it.

Hi! There is a company that does 10 or 15 minute inservices that are actually free. I can't remember their name, but 15 minute nursing/CNA inservices in the search box to find them. What you are doing is really good. Are you having the staff off that you are going over these inservices? If you do, the frequent inservices can save you when state comes in to your building.

Another thing I do for the staff in the way of a "mini in-service" is to send out a weekly flier regarding a topic. An example is clarifying the data items for the OASIS assessment. (I am in home care) The flier is titled, "So That's What That Means!" and has a clip art mascot.

The single sheet is sent to all six of my offices where the managers distribute it to the staff. I have gotten good feedback from the staff.....and have even been called regarding where it is if it happens to be a day late getting out!

I have also done similar fliers for other topics, such as policies, infection control issues (washing hands :D , etc.) procedures. It gets the message to many this way and can be read on the job....or at home.

Staff have asked me to do a flier on other topics they felt they wanted more information on. Anything that peaks their interest I find is worth it.

This sounds great, I know it will take me some time to put this together, but will really help our staff. I have such a hard time to get the staff to come to the monthly inservice. But I will try this and see how it works. Thanks for you time .
