Critical thinking "quiz"


Hey all. I need some input, if possible.

Part #1 of the problem: The primary physician/owner of the facility is wanting to have ongoing, random, critical thinking, "pop quizzes" done with the nursing staff. He wants to use this as a tool to continue the critical thinking process. While I think this is a good idea at its base and would like to implement something to that effect, I don't want it to come across as a "we are testing you to see if you are good enough" or as a punitive activity. I want it to be a true learning experience.

Part #2: I am having to basically show proof to the physician/owners of what I have done since I have taken the position in April. I want to incorporate these random "quizzes" but don't want to word it as such. Can anyone help me with how to word this? I don't want these to be a "You answered poorly, so you are a bad nurse" situations, and I don't want the physicians feeling like that is what is occuring.

I think if you use case scenarios it would be helpgful and make sure they know it is a no shame no blame culture. THat you just are hoping everyone can grow professionally.

He is looking at it from a business standpoint. Is your dept (or YOU!) in line with their business plan & corporate goals? What are the goals for your dept? How are you meeting those and what impact is the outcome on overall patient care or employee retention or morale (or whatever else is in their business plan)? In other words, why do they need you? Are you helping staff to meet industry standards? Complying with regulatory agencies? Identifying issues and providing resources to elicit positive outcomes (risk mgmt like falls, infection control like MRSA, etc)? Talk the talk. That is what he wants. Measurable outcomes. You might do an audit of charts after an educational offering to see if the message was received (i.e. we put out a new hyperglycemic protocol in June. I have been auditing and found that MDs and some nurses are not following protocols. I have enlisted Chief of Staff and Risk mgmt to assist me). Good luck
