osce ( observational structured clinical examination)

World Registration

Published

Hi,

I am internationally trained nurse from India. I applied for registration as RN in college of nurses of Ontario Oct 2011. They took over a year and finally determined that my education/ experience is not equivalent to those of current graduates of Canadian nursing program. They have asked me to write Observational Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and pass in order to show equivalency. My question is that have anybody else been asked to take OSCE exam and what to expect? Also what does the college consider while evaluating education as other nurses from my college have been given eligibility without fulfilling any other criteria or exam!!

I haven't attended the information session yet but I will.

are you enrolled to attend the October OSCE preparation session?

yipeng, you should ask the moderators to remove your personal email address ASAP, otherwise like other posters before you, you may be inundated with spam and other irritating emails from frauds. It's a mistake to post a private email address on a public forum, others who have done this had to close their email accounts and they lost the opportunity to receive helpful responses.

Yes, I am enrolled in the October one. I will ask the moderator to remove my post. Thank you so much for the reminder!

Hi, in my previous post #294, I posted my personal email, any chance you could remove the post? . Thank you so much!

The orientation session is October and your OSCE date is in January, that gives you plenty of time to start preparing. In addition to my previous tips on preparing for the OSCE, you can also review an old CRNE prep guide,(the CRNE was the national exam that RNs wrote prior to the NCLEX) The CRNE exam was based on the entry to practice competencies and the scenarios and questions in the guide can help you think about how the entry to practice competencies are applied. The more ways you expose yourself to the entry to practice competencies the better. Also, familiarize yourself with the code of ethics (available on the CNA).

hi im an IEN from india going to write IENCAP on november 24th but was not able to register october 20th information session. so if anyone could please share information that you get from the session after attending it. it will be a great help. thank you

@chitridino I don't know if you are aware but on healthforceontarioca website under resources, there is an IENCAP video that is available to watch after obtaining a password and you can obtain a password by emailing the accesscentre @ healthforceontario. There is also an IENCAP video on Touchstoneinstitute's website that is open to the public.

For those preparing for the OSCE there are public community colleges that offer preparation workshops;

George Brown College continuing education OSCE preparation for IEN course/workshop, October 27/16, cost is $327.00

yipeng did you attend the OSCE preparation session? If so, were there any study tips or resources that you can recommend?

I am really thankful to you for your answers and time you are giving for my questions ? Somebody told me that I can get some training for the clinical practice that they can ask me in osce exam . Like they have lab settings in which they give training . Will that be beneficial ? And is there any textbook which can help me to get idea about osce preparation ? Or I can get examples for competencies ? I will be really thankful to you

Hi Guppawan,

I am also a international educated nurse from India. CNO assessed my application and written that I have to take OSCE exam. I am concerned that which center I can go for the preparation. Is it hard to pass the exam? In case if someone cannot pass it what are the next steps? How long it take for the preparation? Please reply me about these questions or anyone else who can help me? I will be thankful.

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

Technically, the OSCE isn't a pass-fail type of examination. It's intended as an assessment of your knowledge base, skills and nursing practice. The assessors want to see how you process the information you're given about your "patient", how you think about what other information you need to proceed, how you obtain that information, how you determine what you need to do for the patient and how you interact with the patient. The end result is an evaluation of all these factors and a breakdown of areas needing improvement. It's a way of assessing those people whose education isn't quite equivalent to that provided locally but who also have been working as nurses for a significant period of time. The rationale is that didactic (classroom) education is only a foundation and that we learn continually "on-the-job", which should then fill any gaps in the formal education. The best way to prepare for an OSCE is to review the most common illnesses that bring people to nursing care, and then practice taking report, assessing a "patient", deciding what needs to be done for them, planning those interventions and so on. If you demonstrate understanding of the nursing process, entry-level knowledge of nursing care and the ability to interact with patients ethically and appropriately, your report will be a good one.
