Does obtaining a nursing license in the US & Canada require maternity studies?

Hi All,

I am a registered nurse in Australia, having studied a three year Bachelor of Nursing.

I am aware that nursing licence in the United States varies from state to state and is again different in Canada however I wonder if this issue might apply to all states.

In Australia we do not study maternity/midwifery/labour and delivery as a part of our degrees (as there is a separate degree for midwifery). However I believe in the US and Canada this is all included in the four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Is this area of study essential under the education requirements for nursing licensure in the United States and / or Canada?

Yes it is required and we have had some Australian trained nurses post they had to do make up course to meet requirement.

I wonder if you could point me in the direction of those posts.

I believe I have seen mention of this somewhere on the boards but I cannot find it now. Have these nurses taken an entire Grad Dip in Midwifery (12-18 months) or a short course specifically for US registration?

Some took courses from Darwin so you could look for them threads however I would suggest you check with which ever state you are planning on applying to as it may or may-not accept these courses. I know CA do not accept them anymore
