Canadian trained RN working in LA

I was an international student trained in a Canadian University. Now I am a permanent resident of Canada and have been working as an RN since 2010. Currently I am doing my masters study (MSN) full time and working part time. I am trying to move to the states (LA) where my boyfriend is because we would like to get together. However, there are some difficulties and confusions stopping me moving ahead and I would really appreciate if anyone can help me out.

1. Is there a way to transfer my Canadian License to US license? Or I have to take the exam no matter what.

2. I do not have a Social Security Number, will I still be able to write the NCLEX exam?

3. Do I need a VISA to work in the US (I am not a citizen of Canada, just a permanent resident)? What type of the VISA do I need?

4. I am almost half way of my masters, will I be able to transfer to a University in LA to continue finishing it? Or I have to start from the beginning...

5. How's the life for nurses working in LA?

I guess those are my questions so far, and I may come up with more as time goes by.

Wish everyone a good day,

Sabrina

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

You can not transfer license you need to still meet state requirements and pass nclex. CA will not accept application without US SSN

You will need a visa to live and work in the US and it is employer based so will need to meet other steps first then find employer willing to go work visa or immigrant visa. Immigrant visa can take time as a lot is based on where you was born.

Regardstransfer of studies will depend on the university and you need to contact them, you would be classed as an international nurse and fees will be high
