Hi nursing folks,

I am from up north, have been a RN for two years and am planning to move to Maryland in the fall. I looked up the process for getting licensed in Maryland and it seems like such a lengthy process, because before i can even apply with the state I need a SNN#, which means i need either a work visa/or have my papers ready for permanent residence (so that i have authorization to work within the state.

My question is, can anybody recommend an employer (hospitals) or any travel nursing companies within the area of baltimore? See in Canada, we have health authorities and we apply within them to get hired, but I am not sure how it is done in Maryland? Do i have to apply to each individual hospital for consideration?

My next question is, I have heard some Canadian nurses apply in one of the compact states and get licensed (because it is easier and faster with paperwork) do you recommend any state for that and is it worth it? because if i do that then i would have transfer my license over to Maryland.

Lastly, any prep guides or materials you recommend I would benefit from using to help study for the NCLEX exam? I really appreciate your help and support, thank you nursing pals!

Compact has no benefits for you as you need to be living in a compact state to get a compact license. You may benefit from applying to a state that doesn't require a US SSN and then once you have found a employer, move to the US and obtain a US SSN then apply to Maryland and meet their requirements. There may be a delay if you are classed as trained outside the US until you get a license that enables you to work in the state you have a job in.
