i'm registered to take the gre on the 22nd (8 days!) and was wondering what you guys thought about it. i've been studying for it (i haven't done algebra in years) and hope to do well. so for those of you who have taken it:

did you study?

was it harder or easier than you thought?

how long had it been since you had taken math?

any tips?

thanks!

Uhhgggh,

The GRE has no algebra in it. A fair amount of geometry, fractions, etc. If there is algebra, it's not even at the high school level.

But, there is trickery and subterfuge. The math isn't hard, so they have to trick you into screwing up. If you've been studying the guide bookd then you know. Time is everyhting. You have less that minute for each question. Don't get bogged down on one problem. Guess and move on!

Good luck.

Trickery and subterfuge. Excellent choice of words.

It has been a while since I took the GRE and had been quite a while since I had any math before I took it. I did ok.

I used the princeton review on CD-ROM.

Speaking comparatively, it wasn't as bad as the LSAT my friend talked me into taking the other day. Thought it would never end. I was tired of the test before they got finished reading the instructions.

The GRE is a freaking joke. I cant believe they actually call that a standardized test for graduate school admissions.

A regular high school student could get most of the questions right on it.

I am also scheduled to take it next week. I have been studying the Kaplan book and have been doing just "OK" on the practice tests. The program I am applying to says that competitive scores are around the 50th percentile. I am wondering what percentile most people on here scored in? Any insight would be appreciated.

update:

so, i took the gre yesterday and it wasn't as bad as i expected. for the first time ever, i actually did better on the math (quantitative) portion than the verbal. i scored higher than my goal score so i'm pleased!

i agree with wildmountainchild/ernp that there's alot of trickery involved. there were a few trick questions that i caught (and i'm sure there were some i didn't!). i'm glad it's over!

thanks for the info/advice!
