Starting Salaries for NPs

I attended an information session on graduate programs in advanced-practice nursing at a local university. I learned that the average starting salary for nurse practitioners in Ohio is in the $50,000s! I truly can't believe this! A new grad staff RN can easily make this much in my area. On salary.com, the average for NPs in my area of Ohio is in the upper $70,000s. Is there really such a difference between starting salaries for new grad NPs and the "average"? How long does it take to start making a salary that compensates the extra education and responsibility?

In the Dallas area, salaries have come up quite a bit for NP's in the past few years. I expect that will continue and that it will be more widespread as demand for NP's increases.

It's a win-win for the physician and the NP, they both make money. As physicians come to realize the business potential of NP's, there will be more job openings and more competition to hire them!

True- many Master's level employees (such as myself in public health) earn more than Ph.D.s (such as my boss). Most people don't do it for the money.

Anyone know the starting salary for NPs in KY? I know a new grad RN starts off close to 40K as a staff nurse.
