PNP outpatient to inpatient?

Specialties NP

Hi, for seasoned (and new) PNPs out there, do you have any advice for someone with very little inpatient experience who wants to make the switch to working in an inpatient setting?

I'm a fairly new PNP currently working in an outpatient pediatric/primary care office for a little over a year now. I recently graduated from a direct-entry MSN program back in 2014. My current job does not require me to round or take call at the hospital like the physicians do. The program I graduated from was also very specifically designed for "primary care PNP" and involved zero inpatient clinicals for us during the master's portion of the program so it has been a WHILE since I've done even inpatient work as an RN.

Would you recommend doing a residency program in acute-care/emergency medicine? Should I just go back to school for my acute care pediatric NP? Or has some of you that were in my similar situation simply get hired for a job that was willing to "teach" you as you went along...?
