New NP asking about Tennessee

I am writing because I have questions about working as a NP in Tennessee. I currently live in Az which is an open state but the weather here has finally gotten to me and my family and we are ready to move. I am graduating in a month and have been seriously considering Nashville area. I understand there is a collaboration agreement between nps and mds which i am ok with especially at this point of being a newer provider. Can anyone tell me about their experience working, the pay there and if they recommend the state to work in and live in? Majority if my nursing career is emergency, trauma, internal medicine and rural medicine. These areas are all interesting to me and will be persuing a career in one of these areas. I am hoping someone can shed some light on this topic so i can choose a state that will suit my work needs as well as my family needs.

Hi,

I currently work in TN, about 4 hours away from Nashville. I work at a level 1 trauma center (hospitalist) and also cover a community hospital. The pay is pretty good considering the cost of living. Base salary is 95k which doesn't include RVU bonuses, tuition reimbursement, performance bonuses and extra shift pay. The collaboration agreement is not really a big deal. I work for a group of MD's and just had to get one of them to sign a basic form from the TN BON. Took about 2 weeks to get my license after I sent in all paperwork. TN is a great state to live in, weather is not horrible. We go to Nashville several times a year and love it there. Tons of things to do and just a nice city. Hope this helps some. Good luck:)

Great Info SunshineNP and welcome. What is your ARNP specialty? Are the hospitalist NPs in TN mainly ACNP or other specialties (ie. FNP or ANP)? Thanks.

Welcome Justin,

I can't speak to TN specifically as I practice in a neighboring state. I used to like the Pearson Report for comparing NP practice in different states. I don't think it is currently published but you google and find an old report that has useful information. Good luck and I will be interested to hear other responses to this thread. I have heard anecdotally that there is a saturation of some NP markets in TN.

I live near Knoxville and work part time for a hospice agency and I also do aesthetics. I have friends that live in Nashville and there seems to good job opportunities for NPs in middle TN. I can speak only for East TN but the market here is a bit saturated. There are 6 or 7 NP programs in the Knoxville area in addition to at least 3 PA programs. The only jobs I ever see advertised are jobs no one really wants like minute clinic and Walgreens clinic. Pay is my area is 80-90k average for full time work depending on what area you are working in. NPs working ED and inpatient seem to be more in the 95-100k range. Weather here is a great and you can't beat living in the south! Good luck!

When it comes to working in an ER or as a hospitalist does TN hire ARNPs more than FNP? I will be a certified FNp but I have ACLS PALS i have been through ER boot camp, skills seminar for urgent care, inpatient and hospitalist clinical rotation. Just trying to get an idea of path on whether to get my cert in acute care as well to start at to get to my goal
