Is the grass greener?

Specialties NP

Published

I am looking for a new job (and almost have an offer or two this week). I have been with my job now since February and really love my collaborative physician. She's there when I need her metaphorically but sometime's is too stressed to really help me and most of the time when I need help she's unavailable seeing patients herself. So although my boss is great to me I'm not feeling satisfied. I've seen lots of information about new NPs not staying with their first job very often d/t not being satisfied with their mentorship etc. This job I'm looking at taking is a retail clinic (hospital owned). Less pay but there is full benefits. My current job is higher pay and they pay a stipend for insurance which is very helpful. However, I'm a specialty consultant. I have to hunt my patients down to see them. Bottom line, I'm feeling burned out already. Is this common? Am I making a mistake leaving a possibly cush job for one that rotates weekends and less pay? What are your thoughts? Are there any of you that love their retail job???

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

My advice is that with any new job there is a learning curve. I've been an APRN for 11 years now - and this is my first APRN job. I am now changing to another specialty and although I have assessment skills and time management, I know I have a lot to learn.

I say give it a year....
