help with trying to decide on ANP or FNP

Specialties NP

I am currently working in the OR and now want to go to NP school. I am interested in weight management, cosmetic surgery and optometry. Are these areas that NP can work in and if so what type of nursing should I get expereince in before applying to NP school?

I believe there are NPs that work in cosmetic surgery and weight management. However, I have never heard of NPs working in optometry, but I guess there could be, given the right experience. I would say getting some general med surg experience is good say for several years to give you some acute care background. After that, maybe working in an outpatient setting would be valuable as well. I guess possible working with a plastic surgeon if your interest is primarily cosmetic surgery. NPs practice weight management in a variety of different specialties including primary care. It's best to hone in on something a little more specific in terms of what you really want to do, then focus in on that. Good luck!

It would be pretty unusual for anyone not an optometrist to work in optometry. The ability to do refraction is pretty much limited in most states. There are PAs working in ophthalmology though (not sure if there are any NPs).
