Getting a job in the ER/ED?

Specialties NP

Published

Hello!

I'm very interested in working in the ER as a nurse practitioner. Do we have any ER NPs here? I could use advice on how to go about getting the right combination of experience. I'm a new grad FNP with no RN ER experience. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Sandnnw,

An urgent clinic would be terrific. Can you share why not a Minute Clinic? I've been told this before, but don't know why it's a bad idea.

Volunteering/shadowing really sounds like the way to go. I'm hoping someone will just give me the chance to do that!

Thanks for the advice. I definitely do not have the luxury of waiting around for the dream job. Those loans will be kicking in before I know it.

Take a look at the recent post, "NP career after retail health..." says it all.

sniff, sniff, achooooo.

Your scope is severely limited by corporate headquarters and the EMR. We have 1-2 folks that show up, coming from retail health, not getting definitive treatment (ticked). Don't get me wrong, they have their place and I'm grateful the service is provided as I have taken my kids before.

Again, I'd look for a private Urgent Care. You won't suture, image or IV/lab anyone at a retail clinic, the skills you will need to get into the ED.

Also, I think someone mentioned the CA state APN scope. Better review that as well. You may find a post-masters ACNP with ED concentration might help you (in every way).

The UCSF program is highly regarded.

You might consider working a PRN RN job.. Just to keep some $$ coming in. I know a TON of ER NPs that started in Urgent Care. I think having a DEA license and ANCC certification is what got them their first jobs. Depending on what state you are in the DEA might be tough without first already having a job.. However you should still be able to register.

Thanks so much . . . I definitely will need to do some kind of work to keep money in, and would be grateful for a PRN RN job. I'm in California if that matters (and I think it does in regards to the DEA license -- I think I need 6 months MD supervision before I can apply for DEA -- not thrilled about this).

Thanks!!
