Does this sound like a good first job?

I'm a new grad FNP who is being offered a position in a large clinic system. The hiring manager was very intent on discussing scheduling with me during my interview, and she wants me to float for my first three months on the job. I would be covering multiple providers over the holidays. These three months are also my probationary period. Thereafter I would be assigned a home clinic.

The job itself sounds okay--working with underserved (my primary interest), fair to lower pay but possibility of loan repayment if HRSA accepts me, small signing bonus, etc.

i see positives and negatives in this arrangement, but I'm curious about how more experienced NPs feel about this. Do you think that floating for your first three months of practice would be a mistake?

I want to do a good job obviously, but I'm afraid of opening myself up to tons of scrutiny about how I choose to treat other providers' panels as a new graduate. On the plus side, I could experience the entire system and see how a variety of providers treat their patients.

i would really appreciate any feedback.

I'm a new grad myself. While floating , is this your opportunity to be shadowing / training or you're starting out solo floating from clinic to clinic trying to see where/if you fit?

Floating solo but won't be alone at any site (other practitioners will be available).

Specializes in Adult Internal Medicine.

Honestly, I think it will be a challenge at the novice level. You are talking about a (presumably) difficult patient panel with few resources while trying to cover for multiple other providers, all of whom will have different idiosyncrasies to adapt to.

It's not impossible and you will learn a lot in that first three months. But you will also be pressured. The best thing to can have in your first year is stability and support.
