Hi,

I was wondering who you all think I should talk to about job opportunities for new FNPs vs WHNPs in my area? Should I talk to hospital/clinical recruiters??? I REALLY want to do WHNP but am nervous, like many, about the job market. Thanks!

I see you are in IL - whereabouts? I live near Peoria. As to resources, contact the IL Society of Advanced Practice Nurses - they have an excellent (and brand new) website that will give you lots of info plus some resources to conntact in your area.

In my area, the WHNPs are few and far between and have difficulty getting jobs because of the narrow scope of practice. FNP in my area is the way to go but that might not be the way to go in other places.

Hi there,

I'm from champaign-urbana...not too far from you. I used to drill in Peoria. I have a feeling if whnp jobs are hard to find near you they will be for me too-----esp since CU is smaller than peoria. Are you an FNP? Thanks for the info!

I'm actually an adult health CNS who works in nephrology. Personally, I think FNP is the way to go.

that sounds like a neat job. i've always like the kidneys for some reason! :)

i have a question, if i work pp & l&d while going for my FNP, do you think it will hurt me from getting an FNP job....since i would have experience in ob? thanks!

Does FNP cover OB? I didn't think it did? So, even if you had RN experience in OB, if the FNP scope of practice doesn't cover it, you won't be able to do it either.

One of my co-workers has only worked pp & l&d & just finished her FNP. One of the ob docs hired her. I just couldn't deliver babies, which is fine. For a while I thought I would want to be a nurse midwife. But I decided that since I'm not really good w/ functioning on interrupted sleep that it wouldn't be a wise choice for me or my pts.

Yes, the FNP covers OB/GYN. I was a ANP/GNP and went back for the FNP and all I had to take was the Child/Maternal class. We didn't cover children under 12 nor OB in the Adult NP program. So, yes you can do everything a WHNP can do as a FNP, plus a heck of a lot more!
