California SB 1524

Specialties NP

Published

It appears that California SB 1524 has passed. This law should do away with the current law requiring 6 months of supervision before a NP can apply for a furnishing license. Do you know if NP's will be able to obtain a furnishing license if they're an unemployed newly graduated NP. It seems like already having a furnishing license would stream line the process of looking for a job, and make NP's more attractable to possible employers. What does everyone think?

Like it! thanks for the info. We've hired new grads in our group and the lack of furnishing license has not been an issue but takes extra effort from senior NP's to sign off on med orders written by the new grad NP. That will eliminate that step for us.

You may be able to apply for a Furnishing License with your initial application for NP certificate. However, CA law still requires a Standardized Procedure document which includes a formulary so technically you can't furnish without that document. Employment as an NP is the typical route for getting a Standardized Procedure process going.

Juan, thanks for the insightful information. I'm a floor nurse who is thinking about starting NP school, and the issue of obtaining a furnishing license always seemed a bit odd to me. Do you mind if I ask what part of CA you work in, as well as what specialty you're in?

This is great info. I just graduated and got my ANCC cert. in May and this furnishing number/DEA business has been a real deal breaker in looking for a job. Everybody seems to busy to sign off for the 520 hours currently required in the application (which I just downloaded again today 7/22). I hope they update the application ASAP so I can get a job. Thanks again for the info.

SB 1524 has not been passed nor has it been signed by Governor Brown. It's just sitting in the Assembly. Does anyone know when the governor will sign the bill into law? Thanks.

Does anyone have any idea when California SB 1524 will be signed into law? thanks

Not sure if its the same bill but Gov. Brown signed a bill on saturday allowing RNs, NPs, and CNMs to "dispense" contraceptives.

It was signed by the governor on Sept 29th.
