About to start NP clinicals. Any words of advice?

Some advice that I can give:

1. Get out of your comfort zone. This is your learning experience so seek out new areas.

2. Have some clear cut goals and objectives that you want to accomplish. This may mean something technical like place a central line or do a procedure or discussing end of life issues with a patient/family.

3. Learn how to dictate!!!! This was something which I'm still learning. Learn the format, the phone numbers, how you sign the transcription, etc..

4. Network with other APNs. Join your state's APN organization. Attend meetings and get involved.

5. Realize that what you may initially want to do may not pan out into a viable position and be flexible about jobs. (My experience is ER and trauma and I'm an APN in a nephrology practice).

6. Relax and enjoy!

I would add too that whenever you start a clinical rotation, always keep in mind that whoever you are paired with can be a potential employer in the future so always put your best foot forward.

Thanks pinoyNP. That's how I ended up working where I am at now. It was where I did my senior practicum and they offered me the job before I graduated. I accepted after I'd passed the NCLEX-RN and have been at the same place ever since....
