Staffing ratios on tele unit?

I am a new nurse manager on a med/surg/tele unit and wanted to know from other managers what their nurse to patient and CNA to patient ratios are. If you've lower the ratios how did you do it. If all positions were filled how did you go about getting approval for another FTE? As stated I am new but I've already noticed that they seem a bit stretched and this might be one of the first things I take on but I need information. As soon as I get settled - I will start collecting data on assignments, daily census, pt compliants, med errors, and falls. What else should I look at?

One place I worked at previously had a 11-11p float nurse who did the admissions, discharges, changed IVs, and generally helped out and it was a huge success with the staff - so this is one option but it would mean adding 2 FTEs or converting two positions.

Ideas? Suggestions?
