Experiences with Duke ABSN Interview Process?

I've been invited to interview for Duke's Fall '09 ABSN program, and am curious to hear previous experiences.

I already have a set of questions for the interviewer and admissions officer, but am curious as to what they will ask me.

Anybody have any ideas?

Also, as a side bar, is the optional post-graduation tuition reimbursement program through Duke Hospital also available as a program loan, meaning that funding is available to pay for the program from time of enrollment.

I had my interview over the phone on the 16th and it wasnt as stressful for me. They ask five or six questions, I believe and most are going to be specific to what you wrote in your personal statement . I would recommend that you review what you put in your statement and think about possible questions they could derive from the personal experiences you discussed in your statement. I believe we were on the phone for a little over 30minutes and they told me we were over our alloted time and that ppl were coming in for their face-to-face interviews. Don't stress about it, if you told the truth in your personal statement and you can answer questions surrounding your PE you will be fine!

They told me that I would find if I got in around Feb/March but I found out I got it a few days after the interview.

I interviewed last fall, was accepted, and choose to defer. They explained at the interview that everyone who is there is there because they are qualified and its all about whether or not you and duke are a good fit for each other. The concept really helped me with my nerves. Most of the questions came from my personal statement and the general mission and such. Why you want to go? Why is duke for you? etc. If your going to interview in person just remember to introduce your self, good posture, focus, interested...etc.

Also, (dont quote me, this is only if I remember correctly from the financial aid thing they did at last years interview day) the tuition through Duke is only available as a loan reimbursement every year on the paycheck matching your year of employment date. Taxes are taken out of it. However, UNC hospital overs a program that pays up front. Its like 24K for 2 years, 30 for 3 something like that. BUT you must apply early in the program, and if you change your mind you owe all the money +intrust. My tour guide did the UNC hospital, but the advisors seem to advice against it? as you could end up changing your mind.

next to a duke bus route h3 & h5 that go to the hospital & within biking or walking distance. many people walk from the duke parking lot next to station nine to get to the hospital. this is also within the hospital safe rides area so if the buses are not running there is transportation 24/7. my friends there never mentioned undergrads living there but you'll have to call the apt to find out. they fill up early.

closest apts. to the hospital- 1/4 mile so many people walk or ride bikes. there is one bus h5 that stops near the lofts. also within hospital safe rides area. i heard they allowed some undergrads to move in one section recently so make sure you are not placed in apt. near them.

if they are looking for a little cheaper or a little further way from the hospital there are a lot of hospital staff/students that live at deerfield. i found deerfield on an online med school suggestion list for housing. it's a little older though & backs up to duke forest. if they don't like nature or have bad allergies probably not the right place. unless you take the city bus or bike to the hospital you'll have to drive to a parking lot then take the duke bus or walk to the hospital.

as for renting houses it's hard to tell online what the neighborhoods are really like so i wouldn't sign a contract without visiting the neighborhood.

when i was looking for housing there were a couple of websites or group pages by medical and nursing students with housing suggestions but the links i used no longer exist.

duke parking & transportation can tell you which parking lot you would probably end up in if you purchase a parking pass.

there are some apts on lasalle drive, campus walk and morreen road. despite their proximity to the hospital

there have been security issues in multiple complexes including duke manor, the belmont, campus walk & georgetown manor.

I was told by a student who just started UNC's program that UNC has, at the current time, discontinued their tuition reimbursement program due to the recession. I can't be 100% certain about that as it was second hand information, but she seemed pretty confident that was true when she told me.

It is true that the UNC tuition program is no longer an option (at least for Duke students). ***** sent out an email about this recently.

I'm scheduled to interview at Duke in February. Can anyone give me some insight into the process? Do most people that interview get accepted?

There were 197 applicants to Duke this year. They told us they would be interviewing somewhere between 125 to 140 of us for the 70 available positions. You should join our other thread (Duke ABSN for Fall 2010 or something similar). There's a lot of information there! Good luck at your interview!!
