NICU nurse aspiring to become an ER or ICU nurse

Hi I am a NICU nurse with 1 year experience back home. I came to Toronto, Canada and got my license. Since I knew that job competition is really tight here I enrolled myself to Coronary Care 1 and 2, took ACLS and about to take a fulltime course for Critical Care Nursing Program (distance learning) in May. I just had an interview for a NICU position and I have a strong feeling that I'll get it. My dilemma is, I love NICU nursing but I have this passion to extend my knowledge skills when it comes to adult acute and critical care. I am also scheduled for 2 interviews both for ER position. I am thinking of accepting the NICU offer and if I get the job for ER I am also willing to accept it. lol. I am really torn. Honestly, when I was in NICU I kinda forgot my general nursing skills and knowledge. NICU is a highly specialized field, I love it but still I find myself wanting for more. Also, having experience in adult care opens a lot of opportunities and advancement in career. Hope to get advise from nurses out there.

Unfortunately, I don't have any advice to give you, but I'm interested in hearing some responses! I too and interested in both ER and NICU nursing (still a student), but I think I'd like to stay with a neonatal/pediatric population. I know NICU is one of those fields that nurses practice in for 20, 30+ years, but I want to have the option to switch it up if I start to want a change in my life. Good luck to you!

Hey thanks for the reply.. I accepted the job offer for NICU position and I'm starting my orientation tomorrow. Meanwhile, my references for the ER position have been contacted. Their both part time, so I'm thinking of doing them both at the same time, but if I can't I'll stick with NICU coz I realized I don't wanna deal with demanding and whinny adults. lol. And in the future I might try out PICU. I think I'm really for peds since I'm petite and I don't wanna strain myself lifting big and heavy patients.

About the NICU nurses who've worked for 20-30 years, yea there's a lot who stick with NICU that long. Also, practically speaking, the competition for NICU position is low since there are not much nurses who go for NICU and no male nurses are interested in NICU. Anyways, goodluck to your nursing profession. Don't worry you'll figure out what you really want along the way. The good thing about nursing is we can explore different things. :)

wow. okay, my bad. haha. i shouldn't have said "no male nurses", maybe there are only few male nurses that are interested in NICU. haha. kudos to you male NICU nurses. lol. So far i haven't worked with any male NICU nurse, but it would really be awesome to work with male nurses in NICU for a change. :)
