Moving from adult Med Surg to NICU

Specialties NICU

Published

Hello fellow sisters and brothers!

I just accepted a job offer in a Level III NICU, a huge opportunity to specialize in a nursing field especially when very limited times open up. I am very motivated to get started now on preparing to transition. I still have at least 2 weeks to 1 month before I transfer but I would love to get a head start.

1. Which neonatal stethoscope is best to use for one w/slight hearing deficit in one ear?

2. Other than the 5e of Core Curriculum for Neonatal Intensive Care nursing book, which books (especially easy readers) should I purchase now?

3. Best online tool or program for latest evidence based practice in NICU (free or subscription)?

4. Best website for listening to heart and lung sounds in neonate?

5. Best place to order fun/hilarious nursing socks?

I have read a few of the new grad Q&As and I look forward to reading from nurses like myself who are transitioning from a totally different field of nursing.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to and welcome any helpful advice for this new NICU nurse on her new journey.

Specializes in NICU.

I'm still very new to the NICU, but I have just a couple points. One, check with your unit on their stethoscope policy. My unit does not allow nurses to use their own, instead each bedside has a Littmann Neonatal scope that gets disinfected/repackaged at discharge. Second, I'd suggest the Merenstein book. It's not exactly easy reading, but I've found it great for reference.

I have yet to buy and funny nursing socks, but I've been wearing Sockwell compression socks in some colorful patterns and absolutely love them. Best of luck to you! The NICU is really an amazing place!

I'm still in school so I can't answer most of your questions. But I have found the NANN website (which I love) and if you sign up for the email, they will send you at least weekly emails that have current happenings, research articles, evidence based practice, and upcoming events. Best of luck!
