I need some info on becoming a neonatal nurse.

Well I am a new grad that just accepted a position in a NICU, and I am nervous but so excited. The NICU is such a special area. From what I have been told, it is rather hard to start in the NICU, but I think that depends on individual experiences. First, look at schools and what they have to offer. Many NICU's prefer BSN's (if you look at the requirements) but I can't say that for a fact. I can tell you to investigate schools and get hospital experience while in school. I worked as a PCT for a year and a half, (I only went to college for 2 years) and after a year was transferred to ED. I am now 19 years old and begin work in a few short weeks. Make sure nursing is what you want, I found after starting that it was a whole different experience, but I loved it all! Best of luck to you!

I would worry more about becoming an RN first. There is no training at all for working in an NICU while you are in school. Everything is quite different than anything that you would learn in school.

My other suggestion is to shadow a nurse in this area for a day or two. Working in there, and only visiting in one are completely two different things. Your goals may change by the time that you finish school.

It is quite scary when a 600 gram infant drops his heart rate and isn't breathing, where you have to begin compressions immediately and start bagging them, you don't even have the time to think about it. Their life is literally in your hands at that moment. Something else to consider.
