My sister is 24 weeks and 4 days pregnant and has been in early labour and was admitted to L&D yesterday. They were able to stop the contractions but wont be releasing her obviously until post delivery and are hoping they can buy a few more days before delivery (which is excellent as they were saying withing 24 hours yesterday). They are running magnesuim sulfate infusion, giving steroids, and prophylactic antibiotics. They estimate baby is 1.2lbs (~550G) and no other known issues in pregnancy. I work PICU so I see a lot of these ex 27 weekers in with respiratory issues but have never seen any as young as 24 weekers. What can we expect and how can I help her prepare for what to expect as a family member as I know the delivery alone will be very high risk, not to mention the long road in NICU?

I'm sorry but as per the site terms of service we cannot offer medical advice about what to expect.

The treating OB should bring in the neonatology team to speak with your sister to let her know what to expect and what the options are for the potential impending birth. If not, ask for a consult with neonatology. Perhaps request a consult with a NICU nurse/CNS or social worker for additional information and support

Good luck in such an uncertain time and best wishes for mom & baby.
