Who do I complain to?

U.S.A. New York

Ok so Im a medical assistant ..I wanted to jump start my career in the medical field so I know what Im dealing with ..Next September Im going to Molloy after I get a set schedule, Im going for my RN ..Ok so I have a problem ..I started this job a month ago, the manager (who is not a Nurse just a receptionist thats been there for over 30 years) shes 62 and shes so miserable. She yells at the patients if they leave the waiting room to get something to eat. She yells at the Drs if they wanna leave after seeing all their patients. And at last she yells at the MA's. Since shes having an affair with the head Dr who owns the office, we have nobody we can talk to. Im tired of the verbal abuse.

The last straw was a couple of days ago. She made me leave a patient whom I was giving therapy to, so I can go in the basement to see what another MA needs. THe other MA needed me to find a chart which was on the top floor. Mind you, since I was in with my patient I had to use the bathroom but figured I can hold it for another 10 minutes. So anyway I start looking for the chart and I realize I cant hold it in anymore I need to go really bad ..The closest bathroom is the room next door which is open to all employees. Out of respect I ask her if i can use it its an emergency ...She says "NO! You can never ever use this bathroom" ..So i go downstairs, go back to my patient finished up, I did a 10 hour shift ( my shift was from 9:45 - 5 ) it was 8:30 ..I decided to leave I wasnt needed and I was really upset about how she spoke to me. The next day she yells at me for not saying goodbye ..I normally dont do it but I was really upset. She pays us 7.50 an hour and we get no overtime, no medical, dental or benefits. I check my voicemail, shes YELLING ...I let my mom listen to it, she told me to leave its a unhealthy enviroment to work in ..

Im leaving just looking for work before I do so ..But in closing, who do I report this abuse to? Its everyday and if its not me its always somebody. There are other things like giving patients expired cortizone (expired july 2003) ..and theres a lot of insurance fraud going on ..I want to leave so bad but theres not a lot of jobs for a young MA like myself ...Well if you made it this far down thanks for listening and I appreciate the advice :o

If you are going to leave anyway, i'd file a report with human resources detailing the abuse, write dates, specific incidences and use the words hostile work enviornment. Better to leave sooner than later as you can leave her off of your work reference list as she is sure to leave a negative impression of you with potential employers. ( i realize that managers are now only supposed to give dates of employment and whether you are eligible for rehire, but she sounds like the type not to care about those rules.)

Your right ..I was thinking about talking to the other manager, but I think shes afraid of her too ..This woman has a lot of people under her thumb for a reason thats why shes getting away with it. Patients come to me like your still here whats wrong with u lol ..anyway thanks for the advice, its a really small place there is no human resources just a lot of malpractice going on =(

take care have a blessed day
