In the state of New York can you work as a graduate nurse?

I know some states won't let student that graduate work during the time they get their boards in that the case in New York. Because if that is the case I am going to be out of work soon. :(

I actually turned down two positions at Strong because my wife is being transferred back to Portland, OR. They were hiring a lot of med/surg positions, some in the ED, some in psychiatric, and the list goes on. I was actually surprised at how many opportunities (and the variety of those opportunities) there were. In Portland, it is pretty much med/surg to start (though possibilities in PEDs and/or OB might exist).

Did you want to start in med/surg? You aren't required to at a lot of hospitals here in Rochester and the advice I have received splits about 50/50 as to whether or not it is a benefit if you don't ultimately want to work on those units.

Specializes in ltc, assisted living,& private duty.

I have been working as an lpn in pediatric home care for the last 2 1/2 years. Going this route has been very hard lots of eve & nights..of course very little sleep and this is on top of trying to complete my rn. I got to thinking that maybe when its a little closer to graduation a med/surg floor might be a wise choice. Then I could brush up on some clinical skills. Just trying to keep my eye on the prize. And of course looking into different options in regards to a bsn. Maybe a diabetic educator. Thank-you for responding. Have a great day.

NY lets you work as a graduate nurse. However, if you fail the boards you can't keep working as a GN.
