I am possibly moving to the area for dh's school stuff and will be a new RN. Any good hospitals in the area and what is the pay like? Also, I have kiddos and am wondering what the schools are like? Thanks guys! :)

I really don't know much about Yonkers. However i always thought if i moved to that area of town i would work at Albert Einstein Hospital in the Bronx (short drive from yonkers)the hospital is beautiful inside and they pay well.

I am from the bronx and there are some nice areas in yonkers and some not so nice so it depends . Regarding schools I could not tell you. I do not like nyc public schools I am a fan of private schools. Even though I lived in brooklyn and the bronx at the time I sent my son to Delasalle Acadamy, you have to take a test to be admitted but it is a great school. They really teach the kids the value of education, good values, and give them first rate education. I do not care how far I had to travel my son got a great education. He is in college now but the principal of that school still keeps in touch with the graduates and have them come for reunions because they serve as role models for the other kids..........they help the kids prep for high school and even help them when time for college comes

That is a rare find today but it all depends on your way of raising your kids and whether you value all that..........the kids from that school are still friends today. that also do to a lot of prayer they are located in 96 and amsterdam avenue and the 1,2,9 train go there.

the biggest hospitals in the area are Montifiore hospital with there moses division on Gunhill road not far from yonkers and their Albert Eienstein Division

it depends what specialty you are no maternity at moses division and mose has great ped hospital that is brand new.

then you have a local hospital in yonkers that I know nothin about other than it looks clean and quiet my dad was there as a patient and that is Saint Josephs.

Other hospital in the area are Jacobi hospital but I would not like to work their they are though the trauma center for this area they are the best for trauma.

then there is lawrence hospital in bronxville it is a quiet hospital in a really nice community I did my first rotation there and it was really nice the doctors nice the nurses nice they where organized they are located in bronxville and you can get there through the metro north train from yonkers not a bad ride. did not choose there to work cause I wanted to gain experience in iccu and I think you need to work in a bigger hospital for that.

the area in bronxville is beautiful do not know what the pay there is but in terms of environment really nice

well that is all I can tell you hope it is of some help Good luck I lived in MO for some time wonder where in the mid west your from

take care angela

the area is good- and bad. the outerlying areas are the same. i suppose you can say there's something for everyone there. my hubby works ems there, so i hear about the horror stories.

as far as hospitals go, you have a lot of options. manhattan is not far at all. you can also work in the bronx, or westchester county med center (they have a new children's hospital there).

Does anyone in this forum have any word on St. Joseph's in Yonkers?

Are they supportive of new grads? How was their orientation and preceptorship? Were some units better staffed than others?

My first job was @ Einstein.... outstanding place to work!!!:heartbeat

I don't think Montefiore/Albert Einstein takes new grads, in fact, hardly any of the hospitals in the Bronx are accepting new grads at the moment.

There are "good" and "bad" places anywhere you go, so I can't add much to that discussion.

St.John's Riverside (they seem to favor Corcoran students and anyone living in that area)

SoundShore

Lawrence Hospital

Westchester Medical Center (they have a new grad nurse residency program, but it's hush, hush)

White Plains Hospital

I live in Yonkers, work @ Mount Sinai in the city...I live in Tuckahoe, which is a nice area of Yonkers but the schools are marginal- get over to Eastchester/Scarsdale & they improve....hospitals: hospitals in the city pay HANDS DOWN much better than places I looked in Westchester when I moved here 3 years ago....I interviewed @ Westchester Medical Center, White Plains Hospital, & Sound Shore Medical Center....WMC- not impressed- had a travel contract with them & they cancelled me on my first day due to "economic constraints"...not nice. WHITE PLAINS- loved the hospital but starting salary was 58,000 compared w/ city hospitals roughly 70,000....SSMC- worked there per diem for a month- pay was great but in a dumpy neighborhood; I would have stayed but they didn't have any full-time with benefits positions....good luck! I love NY!
