Hunter Bellevue School Of Nursing? Other Nursing Schools in NYC?

Im currently entering Hunter as a pre nursing student and I plan to take all my pre reqs before the end of freshman year and apply after taking the NLN Pax sometime in January or February O:

Can anyone tell me how difficult getting into this program was for them? What kind of GPA did you get in with or what kind of score you needed on the NLN?

If I dont get in I was planning on applying and transferring to a different nursing school in NY so any suggestions for that too?

Hey! I hope my experience with apping to many NYC nursing schools will help you!

Before you do anything in terms of applying, I'd highly recommend starting an excel spreadsheet with the deadlines and prereq requirements for each program since they vary. For example, some programs ask for a nutrition course (NYU) while others don't (Downstate). However, if you're apping to both, you'll need to take that course! (I was half way through my nutrition course when I got my acceptance letter to Downstate but unfortunately had to continue with the class anyway!) Adelphi on LI asks for a genetics course, which is very hard!! I didn't see any other programs asking for this course, and since I was taking three prereqs in one semester, there just simply wasn't room for genetics so I didn't app to Adelphi.

I already had a Bachelors so I was able to apply to Accelerated nursing programs at NYU, LIU-Brooklyn, and Downstate. I got into all three accelerated programs that I applied to and chose to go to Downstate since they were the most affordable program. I was very impressed with LIU-Brooklyn's admissions department. They were so helpful to me since I was missing a chemistry II (NYU and Downstate only required one semester of Chem) and they tried to find me a course at another college which would help me meet their June 1st deadline. It turns out that I wasn't able to, but since I already got into Downstate, I was happy with that outcome.

As for traditional Bachelors programs, I also applied to NYU and LIU-Brooklyn's regular track programs, both of which I got into out of default based on my acceptance to their acclerated program since at any point, an accelerated student can "downgrade" into the regular track programs at these schools.

I submitted an application to Molloy College, but it was returned to me and thus not even reviewed since they were still reviewing candidates from the following semester (I went to an open house, and I'm sure the admissions staff was well aware that they wouldn't review any additional candidates yet they still took my app fee! lol) They are the largest and most popular nursing school on Long Island but they, in my opinion, take too many students. I met some of their students at a nursing conference and a large chunk of students weren't placed in clinical sites at all during their regular semester since there simply weren't enough hospitals to place all of their students; as a result, these students had to go to clinical sites months later during odd evening/weekend hours in order to pass their classes.

I did not apply to Hunter because I was taking my prereqs at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn where I met several students who had been apping to Hunter for several semesters (these students had GPAs that blew mine out of the water) and so I figured it wasn't worth the extra time and money. However, a few of my classmates at Downstate did get into Hunter, so my worries may have been unfounded. Hunter also has an accelerated program that I hear fantastic things about.

I also did not apply to Medgar Evers College's nursing program, even though I was taking my prereqs there, because they only accept 40 students and generally take students who studied with them all along. I also wanted an Bachelors and this program only had an associates.

If you're aiming for an associates, Kingsborough is a great program to check out. The sister of one of my classmates was studying there while my classmate was studying at Downstate, and there were definitely some positives which stood out about Kingsborough when comparing it to Downstate. The simulation lab at Kingsborough seems to be more stocked, better used and better incorporated into the courses. Also, the professors at Kingsborough seem to put in more effort into their students than the professors at Downstate.

Hello. Now I did not apply to Hunter's program, but I did apply to Lehman, since both are in the CUNy system I assume they have pretty similar processes. Now you say you are entering freshman year this fall, if this is true, you will not finish all pre-req's within one year. Unless you already have a bachelor's, then a year is possible. However, if you are a first time college student, or do not have any degrees, then it will take you about 2 years before you can apply to the program. Before applying to Lehman I had to take anatomy and physiology I & II, microbiology, general chemistry with lab, and organic chemistry with lab, and lastly, the human development and lifespan. Along with these classes you must complete all general education requirments( language, English, liberal arts classes, writing intensives). For lehman specifically, in order to apply to the program, one must accumulate a total of 60 credits with all of the above courses mentioned completed. A grade C or better must be obtained, though I recommend B+ and above.

Now lehman no longer uses the NLN, they use the HESI exam now. We were tested on A&P, English and math. I received an 86 out of 100, not great but I got in, but I have a 3.9 gpa to go along with that.

In terms of other colleges in ny, each is different. So I agree with the previous poster, do you research now, and get all dates, requirements,etc as soon as possible.

Also, if you plan to apply to any thee cuny college, you must be admitted to Lehman college itself first before you can apply.

I am sorry I was only able to give information about Lehman, but I believe the process and requirements are similar.

Hey! The Excel Spreadsheet seems like a really great Idea. I think Ill probably end up applying to Hunter of course, downstate, and lehman college. I might consider applying to NYU's program and LIU's program as well if I find myself lacking confidence. Thanks for all the help.

And Toya, thanks for the info on lehman. Hunter is also a special program where i apply during the first year and study nursing for 3 years. I get a bachelors at the end. Since im aiming for a bachelors this will be perfect.
