- ive been hitting walls. quite discouraging. cannot find a job in the north jersey/nyc area. ive been driving an hour each way to my old job that underpays me. -$20 day on gas and tolls. in the end i make the same amount of money as i did as an lpn. thinking about going back to bartending. MUCH less stress.. i thought i was going to get my BSN, but hardly find any motivation to do so. more school?? for only a CHANCE of HOPING to get a well paying job in a hospital? dont know if its worth the stress and investment.. looking at my resume makes me sick. and searching for jobs every day makes me angry.

try home care agencies

you should get your BSN anyway because each year more hospitals are requiring or prefering nurses with BSN. I've been there I know how difficult it is. you may want to check prisons. i have worked at the prison for a long time because nobody hired me as a new nurse. Most people think it is dangerous to work at prisons but that's not true at all. you are never alone with/out inmates. There's always correctional officer near by. Prison settings are different than hospital settings but for sure you will learn a lot about medications. So just go for it.

how much do they pay in prisons for RNs?

well i have my bsn, bls and acls graduated may 2010 and have applied to every single hospital in nyc, queens, brooklyn and still not one call. i've done internships in l&d, sicu, and icu before graduation, thought it would help but it seems its worthless!!!

i really don't know what else to do. i have also applied to schools, nursing homes and nothing!

in the begining as a full time (new graduate) i was paid 31/hr then i became PRN and i was paid 40/hr. as PRN i was doing a lot of over time i mean a LOT :)

how did u find prison jobs? through job postings? or did u look up the prisons and apply directly?

I'm so discouraged with this damn job search! Gah! 4 years of school (not including the schooling where I was in limbo deciding what to do), thousands of dollars in loans, and nothing. Nada. Zilch. Zip.

I've been on some interviews, and a lot of the time I am brushed over because I don't have experience. I had one woman ask me why I haven't tried to get per diem nursing jobs through an agency, and when I told her I have tried, she didn't seem too pleased with my answer.

Today on the HHC website for employment they posted some nursing jobs for "prison psychiatry" I believe. You could try looking there. Also the state of New York I believe does the hiring and posting for most correctional facilities, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

i got my prison job at Job Fair. they had a stand there i gave them my resume and a week later i called them back then they asked me to come for interview which was a joke. Hiring person came to me and she said do you have pa license and i said yes and then she says next monday there is orientation be here 7am :) that was it. i worked at PHS which is a company provides healtcare for inmates. there are other companies as well doing the same thing. check prisons' website under careers you would find opening for nurses. usually nurses work under contractor not a state employee. check them out. here's the link for phs http://www.phscorrections.com/
