Clovis/Portales Job Opportunities? Do they exist?

My husband is in the Air Force and he just got a new assignment in Clovis, NM. I will be trying to attend nursing school at the college there. Just for the heck of it I checked out the local hospital websites for job listings for nurses and there were hardly any there at all (maybe one). I know it's a pretty small town, but has anyone else had this problem? Did you have to resort to travel nursing?

On another note... anyone attend Clovis Community college? :)

Nursing positions can be difficult to come by here. You actually answered your own question. It is a small town and we have one of the finest nursing programs so...simply put, supply and demand. We actually are one of the only places in the entire country that has more nurses then we have jobs for. I could never understand why the nursing recruiters from other areas were not hammering at the nursing school signing up nurses. And why no nursing job fairs?

Anyway, some nurses do travel but that usually requires a few years experience. Others work in Amarillo, Lubbock, Roswell, or Carlsbad. You will find that some will rent a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment and then share with other nurses. This allows you to split your costs and commute. Most hospitals in these areas are quit aware of the situation and many will work with you in regards to the commute issue. Not perfect but for many this seems to work.

Once you enter school and get closer to graduation you will be surprised at your opportunities. They may not all be here but you will work something out.

Hope this doesn't discourage but encourages you to continue. The world of nursing is so vast and exciting with opportunites abound.

The nursing program in Clovis is excellent, I"m currently a student there-Yes it is challenging, but I know many graduates and they are excelling in the profession.

Finding a hospital job currently would be difficult because the hospital is on a hospital freeze. However; once you graduate from school the freeze will probably be over, and there will be jobs available. You have other options like LTC, home health, school nursing, public health, and etc.

For now just concentrate on school becasue it will be will take at least 2 years to get your RN, and if you have prereqs it can take anywhere from 1/2-2 years to complete your preqs.

I see this post is over a year old, but Cannon AFB is a possibility for my husband. We will find out for sure in about a month. Is the situation still the same? Sounds pretty discouraging. I have 4 yrs L&D experience. Is the distance to Amarillo, Carlsbad, Roswell, or Lubbock closer than Santa Fe or Albuquerque? I would travel as a last resort as I am currently breastfeeding an infant.

Here's the website for the hospital located in Clovis, NM: - Presbyterian: Career Opportunities Did a search at this website, there wasn't any L&D positions open now, but you can continually to check. The other hospital located in Portales NM, does not have L&D. Its a 22-bed med/surg unit. Cannon AFB, NM is what it is....Good Luck at your future assignment.

Thank you RussA! If we move to Cannon it will be in November, I don't plan to start looking for a job until we are somewhat settled. Maybe there will be an opening in L&D at that time. If not, well I would be willing to step out of my comfort zone and try something new.
