I will be relocating to las vegas next year. Does anyone know which hospitals have the highest salaries, and what they are? Also, do you know anything about the unions?

Look into St. Rose Dominican...I'm holding a sheet they just sent me and I think the starting pay is around $25 with the following diff:

Evening 3-11 $1.25

Night 11-7 $2.00

Weekend $5.00

They seem to be a good facility and I liked the package they presented to me. Of course, I'm still 16 months away from obtaining licensure....LOL!!! Also, Mountain View was recommended by one of the posters on this board who lives in Vegas. We are looking into relocating down there after my ADN program is finished and I have passed my boards. Good luck!!!

Be careful of the Valley Health System. They just opened a hospital called Spring Valley and offering slightly higher pay but Valley Hospital (one of their other older hospitals) is very understaffed and I walked out on an assignment there when they gave me 8 patients on a surgical unit with no CNA to assist. I've heard from other nurses they sometimes assign up to 11 patients.

The pay is low here which is amazing when their bordered state, CA, is paying at a much higher rate. They say it's because the cost of living is lower but it has risen quite a bit in the last 4 years since I moved here.

Agency nursing is much better here and the pay is better. You decide where you want to work without committing to someplace where they will overwork you and underpay you. You will learn which hospitals are concerned about their patient's healthcare and not the almighty dollar quickly. Then you can make an informed decision about where you want to sign a contract. You will be recruited at every hospital you work at. Patient's are frustrated with their care here and let you know it. They are angry when you first enter their rooms.

Nevada has the least amount of nurses than any other state. They are recruiting big time here but are not treating nurses very well. The patients are the ones who are suffering from it. There is a review going on right now to change the nurse-to-patient ratios like in California but it's supposed to take up to to years (the review).

Look at my website for more info:

how do you figure this? Ca is a huge state with many different areas and costs of living. I can tell you since I've moved to Vegas I've saved a TON of money. You can't figure a pay based on a bordering state and believe me, the cost of living here is no where near high! No state tax, low car tax, very low housing.

Hi, I also am planning a move to Las Vegas, probably in 6 months or so. Please e-mail me if you find a good hospital to work at. I received a packet in the mail from Valley Hospital, and also from that St.Domincan Hospital { or whatever its called], but they do not include wage info, only benefits, sign on bonus, and relocation info, so I will have to call there human resource dept. I'm not sure if either place is union or not. Valley Hospital seems to be a big place, I think they have 3 or 4 hospitals in the area, but otherwise no nothing about them, I will continue to research, and will let you know if I find out anything.

Check out Mountain View...I volunteer there and I hear nothing but good things about working there.

Nevada ranks 7 out of the states for pay, so I'm not sure where you are getting that pay is low. Granted, CA is 2 or 3 on the list, but still, comparing cost of living to pay, NV is a pretty high paying state for nursing. Especially when you compare the salaries with some of the other states!!

Do you still have the rest of this list? I would be interested in seeing it...thank you!

It's on a thread here somewhere...if I come across it again, I will let you know! = ) Or you can post a question about it and maybe the original poster will post it again for you...it was a website link that led you to a map of the US. You could click a state and it would tell you the ranking of that particular state.

I heard this on NPR and saw it on the news, I've been trying to find the whole study but not luck yet.

I guess Nevada is ranked as a "Social Recession" state

We have one the of highest drop out rates, spend one of the lowest amounts on education, etc, etc etc

When I find this I'll post it, sounded interesting!

I'm not sure this is the same one since Nevada is ranked 12th instead of 7th but it's the only one I can find. I'm planning to move to Reno this summer so I've been researching info.
