Renown Apprentiships?

U.S.A. Nevada

Published

Back in May I was called by Renown to come interview for an apprentiship in the ICU at Renown, I was so excited. The day before I was to interview, I had a message from them and the cancelled and said they were not going to have Apprentiships this summer, maybe August. Anyone know why or if they are infact going to have them this fall? I tried to call the number back they left but noone would ever answer. One of my friends actually made it to the ICU and the said, Sorry.

Thanks Shawn

I work in one of the ICUs at Renown and the reason most likely is that they just hired new grads for both the Trauma ICU and the MICU/SICU (I work here and we have 6 new grads I believe), so that really limits preceptors available for apprentice nurses. May grads usually start in late May or early June and they get 12 weeks of preceptorship, so management usually waits until that's done to hire apprentice nurses who also require preceptors.

August sounds right for when apprentices usually start. I did the apprentice program while I was in school and I started in July, with others starting later in August.

I heard they cancelled apprenticeships throughout the whole hospital this year. Our new grads in the ED said they got the last apprenticeships for our department. It's probably budget related...like everything else. :icon_roll

That's unfortunate :(

I think it's a good program that helped me become more prepared to enter the workforce after graduation, but whatever... They have done a lot of cutbacks in certain areas lately, so that explanation wouldn't surprise me.

Thats a major bummer! I was sooo excited about the possibility of working in the ICU, I could barely sleep! I miss that kind of work soooo much. I worked ER and in the ICU as an EMT and have been away too long. It would have been a good way to get my foot in the door at Renown. Thanks for the info

I thought it was a good program, too. Hopefully they will bring it back...it's a great way for students to get experience.

Although it may not be exactly what you're looking for, you may want to look into a unit clerk or critical care tech position in the ICU if you want to get your foot in the door. We have a few people in nursing school who do that. I'm not sure if a critical care tech requires a CNA...plus, they're probably part or full time positions that would require you to work 2-3 days/week which may be tough while you're in school...just an idea though!
