Questions about Valley health Adopt-a-nurse

Hi, I am a pre-nursing student at CCSN and am curious about Valley Health systems adopt-a-nurse program. I know they pay your nursing school fees and you have to work for them for 2 years after you graduate. Has anyone out there joined their adopt a nurse program and is now working for Valley? I would like to know how you feel about it. How do they treat you, what was your new grad pay and hours, did you get to choose which hospital you went to work for after graduation and did you have any input on which floor\ area they assigned you?

I really have no idea, but I can tell you this I work @ Valley as a contractor not for the hospital, but I do work on site here. I am a nurse and can tell you the nurses here bust their but(not that all nurses don't) but I would not sign up for anything that requires you work for them for 2 yrs. Yes we are in a nursing shortage, but if they offer to pay for your schooling without ever working here prior, that seems like a big red flag to me. Just my opinion

I'm in the adopt a student program with them. I just finished my first semester of nursing school. I think that the program is a good deal because they pay your tuition and gaurantee you a job after graduation. There was one girl in my class who is also in the program. She works as a ER tech at Spring Valley. I asked her what she thought of the program and if the nurses were happy there. She had positive comments. She wouldn't have signed up if she didn't want to work for Valley Health Systems after she graduates. Also, they will train you in all areas of the hospital. After that, you may chose the area you wish to work in. When you're in the program, they offer you the chance to be in the NAP program after you complete the first semester.

I did it and still regret it. I tried to go onto a different area other than Med/Surg. I was promised that as soon as I finished orientation I would be able to and it never happened. They make it virtually impossible for you to transfer to another area since nobody wants to work -Med/Surg/Slaughter house- and they already have MANY philipino nurses that come here with either a lot of nursing or medical experience and they get the special treatment especially since most of the other department have philipino nurses in charge.

Make sure you do your homework before you sign up. If they promise you anything and they will, get it in writing. That was my mistake, so please learn from it.

I got the Women's Auxilliary Scholarship from Sunrise hospital, with no contract whatsoever to work for them. My total scholarship was around $1500. One semester I got $700 and the next semester I got $800. I also got a Perkins loan, in which a portion gets cancelled (for nurses) for each year of employment. It's not a big loan, but it helps. I think St. Rose has a program similar to the one mentioned in another post. I did not apply for that because they didn't start it unitl my last semester of nursing school. I worked as a NAP (nurse apprentice) at St. Rose for 1 1/2 years. The experience was invaluable! I got lots of practice with the skills that I didn't really get to do much in school. I know that they are one of the few hospitals that allow the student nurse to work as a student nurse, rather than a nurse's aide. Also, I think the pay was more than other hospitals, at least in the role of a NAP. I'm not sure about pay for graduate nurses. Good luck.

I just wanted to revive this post as I had similar questions in a thread I just recently started. Does anyone else feel that this would be a positive thing as oppose to a negative thing? I guess because I have not yet officially even begun nursing school (still waiting for CCSN to notify of selection for fall) I feel that these last 2 years went by really quickly and the next 2 will probably fly by. 2 years contractual employment doesn't seem like a long time in exchange for fully-expensed paid tuition and a foot in the door, especially considering that I am an unemployed full-time student and single mother to 2. Does anyone have any thoughts on the benefits that adopt-a-student program may provide? And are there any other hospitals that offer a similar tuition sponsorship in the Vegas Valley? TIA!

I did the adopt a student program with VHS. They paid my tuition and other expenses for nursing school. It really helped me out a lot. I've been working at Spring Valley since last November, and it has been a very positive experience. However, I wouldn't recommend working at Valley hospital. I've heard too many negative things about them. I also heard that St. Rose has a similar program.

Thanks Paleobug. When you applied did you get to choose the hospital of your choice? It looks like you apply to all the hospitals w/in VHS. And is it hard to get selected for the program?

I have been out of school for 2yrs now and did not do the adopt a stud program. I wish I had every time I pay my student loan bills.

I work at Spring Valley and I love it! I started out in l&d and am still there now. I know a fellow student in my class did the adopt program and went to work at Summerlin straight to ICU. However I know that VHS won't let you work as an RN until you take and pass NCLEX. So if you do the adopt a stud program just be prepared to take boards soon after graduation and passing them or else they won't let you work as an RN.
