a large group of registered nurses rallied at the nevada state capitol thursday to start a buzz about a bill to be introduced to state lawmakers in the upcoming weeks.

the national nurses organizing committee sparked the march, which included scores of health care professionals.

according to the organization, the nevada hospital patient protection act of 2009 would require hospitals to guarantee safe rn to patient ratios on all units at all times.

one nurse said the bill is a long-term investment for the state....

Patient ratios are fine but does anyone take into account if the nurse is incompetent , 1 or 10 this type of RN would be bad. Also take into consideration hospital census contantly change from hour to hour. Or is my patient ratio 6 and one of your family members is going to be assigned to me and i cant take them because it would put me over my ratio. Just a different view on an age old problem Bryan:banghead:

Teachers here in Spokane, regularly use their teacher-student ratios, to refuse more students in their classrooms. And if the child has a problem, like ADHD, that child is counted TWICE, to allow for, get this, the additional time it will take to teach/deal/have to take care of additional issues, with a child who has ADHD. Imagine that!!

Staffing according to the needs of each student! I think that we need to emulate what teachers do to improve our workplaces. No one ever died because they could not diagram a sentence, or do long division. But how many of our patients have died, or been irreparable harmed because we had too many patients to have to safely deal with.

And, by the way, teachers UNIONS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE STUDENT TEACHER RATIOS IN OUR CHILDRENS' SCHOOLS. Teachers realized YEARS AGO, that their individual voices were not powerful to effect change in the classroom, and UNIFIED TO BE ABLE TO SAFELY TEACH THEIR STUDENTS WITHOUT SACRIFCING THE QUALITY AND SAFETY OF THEIR STUDENTS!!

That is for the die hard anti union members of this listserve, who, despite overwhelming evidence, continue to spew their antu union rhetoric for the masses to endure, while the nursing profession is being thrown under the bus on a daily basis.
