A patient asked me and I had no clue, how many calories are in a typical bag of TPN (approximatley 1500 to 2000ml)?
Is this more like it?
Typical solution is 15% Dextrose and an amino acid solution - a hypertonic, hyperosmolar solution.
kcal per cc
3.4kcal/gm D5W = 5gm/100ml
D5W = 10 x 5 = 50gm dextrose 50gm x 3.4kcal = 175kcal/L
D15W = 150gm dextrose 150gm x 3.4kcal = kcal/L x 3L/day = 1530 kcal
Lipid solution - usually 250ml bottle of 10% fat emulsion given once daily continuous infusion, i.e., over 24 hours. Can be infused in the same IV line as the TPN, below the filter.
1.1kcal/cc x 250ml = 275kcal/bottle
Additive - electrolytes: Ca, Na, K, PO4; MVI and trace elements
I bow to your greatness
