Hello All,

I am a 3rd year nursing student:yeah: and was just wondering if volunteering with the ICU will better my chances of getting an nurse externship/job in the future? It's not really hands on experience so I wasn't sure if I should go for it or leave it for another volunteer experience? Here's the description below...

Surgical Intensive Care Unit/Medical Intensive Care Unit Liaison: Assist staff by supporting families of patients who are in the SICU/MICU waiting areas. Act as a liaison between families and staff. (Medical Center Campus)

If your plan is to go into critical care, I think this would be a good experience. I'm not saying this will improve your chances of getting an externship position in the future, but it certainly can't hurt. As a volunteer and nursing student you'll have the opportunity to experience how the unit works and what takes place there. The experience may even help you decide if that is truly the field you want to get into.

I wish my unit had such a position. If you do take it, you will get to see first hand how busy everyone is and that having someone to interact with the family and get the things they need would be extremely helpful during a hectic day.

Hi all,

I am new in this site. I am a nursing student and is planning to do my volunteer work in January 2012 for the reasons of fulfillment of my community hours as well as because I would like to get myself familiar with the environment and hopefully the hospital will take me after I graduate. Since this is my time applying and doing volunteer work, I would like to get some suggestions/recommendations in terms of how others search for their volunteer work (well, there are too many hospitals out there and I am not sure what criteria I should consider when applying for a volunteer work. I meant I really want to learn, not being a free labor). Greatly appreciated if anyone can share their experience or giving me some suggestions/recommendations in terms of my concern.
