Meds to know for the New Grad in ICU

Specialties MICU

Published

Specializes in Critical Care / Psychiatry.

I just accepted a position that starts at the end of May in the SICU/MICU.

I personally know that meds are a weakness for me and I want to crack down on them in preparation for this job.

Could anyone point me to a list of important critical care meds to know?

I just need some place to start. Thanks!

Shel

Congratulations to you on your new position! There are many drugs that one uses in the Critical Care setting. Some common drips that we use are: dopamine, levophed, cardizem, nipride, insulin, heparin, diprivan, ativan, esmolol, nitroglycerin, fentanyl, and dobutamine. This is a list of some of the drips. I'm sure other nurses have a more extensive list.

Thanks! Now time to hit my med book!

A good way to organize this is to study the older ACLS manuals and learn the pressors by how they are grouped. If I were you I would use the ACLS manual a lot!

Specializes in Intensive Care.

Also look at phenylephrine, amiodarone, adenosine, furosemide, insulin, midazolam, pancuronium, succinylcholine, roccuronium and NMJBs in general. I probably duplicated a couple meds but I tried not to.
