Second Degree Programs

U.S.A. Michigan

Published

I was wondering if anyone had any advice or experiences in Second Degree Nursing Programs.

I have been trying to get into Michigan States undergraduate program for a year and have applied 3 times but never got in. I am now going to graduate with BS in Psychology next May and would like to be able to start an accelerated program. I have a 3.3 GPA and have finished a lot of science courses.

Any advice or suggestions would be great!

Thanks,

Hi Cassey,

There are several schools that offer accelerated second degree. I start at U of Michigan in early September. They have informational programs several times per year about their program. You can actually apply right now, because they started a rolling admissions program in February. Check their website. They start one accelerated group per year, in September, and it runs 12 months.

There is also Oakland U in Rochester, U of D. Mercy in Detroit, Wayne State to name a few more. Good luck in your search.

Here is a link to UM in Ann Arbor.

Susan,

Thank you for your info. If I am looking to start September of 09 would I then be able to apply this coming February of 09?

I have most of my classes finished that I would need to start at U of M excpet biochem. Do you know if they allow you to finish classes the summer before the program starts? Do you have any idea what the average GPA was to began?

Thanks for your help! U or M is actually my first choice my boyfriend will be starting dental school there this fall.

Have a good weekend!

Cassey,

To answer your other questions:

* GPA required is 3.0

* You need a GOOD resume - you can assume that everyone applying has good grades, so you need to stand out

* You must write 3 short essays, and they carry a lot of weight

* Yes, you can finish you pre-req's the summer before - I'm doing that now. I just finished orgo/bio.

The 2nd degree url:

Check the equivalency sheet for classes that can be taken at other institutions - UM is very good about accepting coursework from other schools, including community colleges. This info is online.

http://www.nursing.umich.edu/admissions/bsn/course_equivalents/

* You will be notified approx 6-10 weeks after you apply whether you are accepted in to 09 class

Thank you all for the help! I will get my app. in as soon as possible!

Hi Cassey-

I am in Wayne State's program right now- the applications close on March 31, I believe, for the CD2 program. You don't have to have all of the prereq's done before applying, just before June 1 of your applying year. (so, if you apply next year, you'd have to have all prereq's done by June 1 2009 - make sense?)

Do you have specific questions, or are you just looking for experiences? You can PM me if there's something specific you want to know.

My general advice would be to apply to all the programs you can. It never hurts to have as many options as possible.

Good luck!

Hi SCaregivr,

I applied to the Accel program at WSU and i am waiting to hear from them. i feel a little anxious and the wait is, well not really something am enjoying right now. Are you in the trad or the accel program? someone said that they have a two week summer class-wellness? for those who get into the accel program. do you know when this class is scheduled to take place? what books do you recommend i peruse as i wait? any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. fill me in could you:)

Yes, I'm in the accelerated program. I agree, the wait is tough. Hang in there. :icon_hug: The summer class is Assessment- a course I took in my 1st semester, but during summer they cram it into 2 weeks! I have talked to others in my class & there is some conflict over this- some ppl think it was good, and others feel at a disadvantage having taken it. *shrug* AFAIK, the class is in late June & July. I haven't really heard dates.

If I were you, I'd review A&P and maybe medical terminology. You can PM me if you have any questions.

Good Luck!!

I am not sure if you would like to move, but I know GVSU (in Grand Rapids/Allendale) has a second degree program. Last I knew they have two, one that was "regular" and one that is accelerated. I did the regular 2nd degree one and it was pretty nice. I know with the accelerated one, they discourage working during the program and last I knew the students got a stipend. this was back in like the summer of 2006, so things might have changed a bit.

Hope that helped, and good luck to you.. :)
