OCC - for Fall 2012 or Jan 2012 prospective students!

U.S.A. Michigan

Hi everyone! Okay so I decided to make a seperate thread for those of us seeing what our options are because we got the dreaded letter from OCC. It was getting hard to filter out the information pertinent to us in the general OCC thread.

I just want to tell everyone not to give up.

I had a meeting with a counselor yesterday, who basically assured me that any drastic changes made to OCC nursing admission policy could NOT be implemented in the very next admission cycle. He said that he had been a counselor for over 16 years, and the last time they made a drastic change (like from waitlist to gpa based) they grandfathered in everybody who would have been 'caught up' in the transition.

I had a 3.824 gpa. I had three classes that were not straight A's (An A- in both american government and english composition two, as well as the dreaded B in A&P 1). I am retaking all three and am going to seriousely aim for all A's. The gpa cutoff is gonna be a 3.9 something and I don't want to have to worry about not getting in again. I am going to do my best to get all A's.

I met with the counselor to discuss my options and see what to do at this point. I was considering going LPN but I don't think i'm going to do that anymore because my biggest aim is to get my RN as soon as possible. The LPN to RN transition program is only offerred every even year. What this means for us? If I were, for example to start the LPN program in January of 2012, it would be over in like March of 2013. Then I couldn't start the transition program until like July of 2014. Then I wouldn't be done with the transition program and have my RN until December of 2015! This versus the ADN RN program, which would start in the Fall of 2012 and finish in like early May of 2014.

Good luck to all of those still trying! We can't give up!!!!!

Somehow I am unable to find these practice tests..... do I need to log in my bb account?I did.. just cudnt find it there.

Yes. You have to be logged in. Once you're on BB, in the right upper corner it should say "Dept of Nursing." Unless it's not there for you guys, but I'm pretty sure it was for me at that time. Anyway, click on that link, and then on the left hand margin, you'll see a bunch of green tabs. Click the one that says "course materials." Scroll down and you'll find medication practice tests.

If that does not work, call the ASC, make an appointment with the nursing math tutor. When I went, they gave me the practice tests in person, and at least that way, if you have questions, you can ask them right there. The tutor I had has since graduated, so I'm not sure if she's still there helping out (she might be), if not, the new person may or may not have these tests. Ask for "..."

I'll PM you her name.

Thanks a lot.. I tried again... we don have that option, we just have pharm course material and that has our ppts. I did find HL ASC web page IV practice ,Medication as well as conversion tests. thank you very much for just being there to guide. Next week is Nervous system test.... mind blowing info to grasp.... wish me luck.

Hi kizeemimi!

During the first six weeks of Foundations, you will be attending classes three days a week: one theory and two lab days. Theory is usually on Mondays; lab is either Tuesdays and Wednesdays or Thursdays and Fridays. Beginning week seven, your schedule will consist of four days: one theory, one lab, and two days of clinicals.

Can you tell me anything about missing days? I absolutely do NOT want to or plan on it but Im just wondering what happens if you do? I looked at the Nursing Handbook, but its kind of general. My sister is getting married in FL on a Thurdsay in November. I assume Im just going to have to miss it but I wondered if I was able to go for 1 day only, what would happen if I missed a day?

If you miss an exam day, you will be able to make it up, but an automatic 10% will be docked. Considering that these quizzes are 30 pts at most, that's not a good outlook. Missing a regular lecture: I've seen people do it once. It won't kill you if you're good at self-teaching. Perhaps make a friend and ask if you can listen to their recorded notes when you get back, or leave your recorder with them and have them tape for you. Theory wise, they don't take attendance, so no one would even notice you're gone. Lab, you have to sign in every class, so you at least have to call ahead of time and let them know you'll be absent. Clinical - you can be absent, but you'll have to do a make-up day.

Hi QuarterLife88,

Can you share with me what your lab schedule was for foundations? I keep seeing "two days of lab" and can't help but wonder what that specifically means. Thanks!

brodygirl,

When you start 1410 you will have theory on Mondays (always), then you may have Tues/Wed lab days, morning from 9-12 or afternoon from 2-5. OR, you may have Thurs/Fri lab. That's for the first 6 weeks. So you'll have school 3 days a week and no clinical (oh those were the days!). Starting week 7, you will have clinical at the extended care facility in place of whatever lab days you had. So if you had Thurs/Fri lab, you will have ECF clinical those two days: Mon - theory, Thurs/Fri - clinical.

That goes on for two weeks.

Then I believe you go back to the three days a week routine (theory, lab/lab) for one week, and then you start your acute care facility clinical and your schedule looks like this: Mon - theory, lab one day a week whatever day they assign you to (they will email you your new lab day), and two days at clinical. And that is standard throughout the rest of your first year.

Did anyone do the yet? I got a quote of 36.75 does that seem right?

Did anyone do the liability insurance yet? I got a quote of 36.75 does that seem right?

Yes, that's what the quoted me also.

Thanks Princess. Just trying to knock all this stuff out the way before August.

So eager! I remember feeling that way...Now I just want to have a good cry :bluecry1: and a nap.
