ADN or BSN????

Okay, so currently I am taking classes to go into an ADN program at a community college somewhere. The only unfortunate thing is that most schools have a waiting list of two years and sometimes more. I am becoming increasingly annoyed by this because I am ready to finally get into a nursing program and get going! The question I have is since there is such a long waiting list to get into a school, should I look into maybe going to a school and getting my BSN? I know that it takes longer but I also look at it like at least I am not wasting two years waiting to get into a program. Anyone's thoughts on this??

Yes. I posted a similar response to another thread somewhere (not sure how to find it). I had checked into getting a BSN through OU (really the only BSN program I looked into, so maybe the others are different). The reason I chose to go the ADN route was that other than doing the accelerated second degree program (which gives you a BSN in 13 months--not feasable for me), they have a 3+ year wait just to start the 4-year BSN program! So that means that it would be 7 years before I could be an RN! At least with OCC, MCC, etc as long as you make the cut you can start within months of getting accepted! I'll hopefully be an RN in less than 3 years! :-) Then, maybe my employer will help with the $$ to get me to the MSN level. That's my 2 cents. ;)

Thanks for your reply! Yes I have heard about the horrible wait list at ou. I was considering maybe wayne state or eastern if I did go that route. I know wayne only accepts about 80 people a year while I am not sure about eastern. I am hoping that once I finish this last pre req for hfcc I will be on my way. While on that waiting list I plan to finish the requirements for occ wc3 and mcc so I can be added to their wait lists as well. I figure if I have my options out there someone will throw me a bone!! If I run out of classes to take while waiting I will start taking classes towards my bsn at that time.

I know wayne only accepts about 80 people a year while I am not sure about eastern.

For the what it's worth department Wayne State took 48 in the traditional program both fall 2008 and fall 2009 not 80. They also accepted 48 both years in the accelerated second degree program for people who already have a bachelors in another area.

Since they ended up scrapping the RN to BSN program entirely due to budget constraints I really don't anticipate them taking more students than in the past few years (we already got charged huge course material fees that quadrupled since 2007 for lab classes don't get me started on that one.... And how mad I am it's $100 more a credit hour to get a masters in nursing than it is to go to med school! I really wanted to continue on there for my masters as the programs are so great but will def be looking at more affordable options now as well) LOVE LOVE LOVE the program, super frustrated at the rising costs and fees.... One more year and I'm done-- no more tuition for a while (phew).

When I called yesterday (5/21/10) to the nursing college the rep that answered the phone said that the GPA is the first thing that they looked at. Not doubting you because I did read that myself on the website. I was really thinking about going to both Wayne State and WCCCD because I heard that taking my sciences at a community college would be better than at Wayne State.

MsAshley - Keep in mind that MCC and WC3 don't have waiting lists! You have to apply each year, and if you make it, you're in, and if not, you have to wait and try again. HFCC is one of the only CC's I know of that has a waiting list.

Yes I am aware now I have been keeping up with several threads on here about various different schools. Mainly MCC. I am really interested in them. I am hoping that I will get in my first time around and am trying to keep my grades as high as possible for that reason. Same with OCC and WC3. I am just going to throw my options out there to everyone and hope that someone does indeed invite me into their program. Its just so frustrating! I will still be taking classes towards my BSN because I want to be able to apply to those schools as well and see what happens. I think I am just getting more so annoyed with the fact that I have been taking classes for two years (I can only take one to two classes per semester because I work full time and have a child) and I feel like I am still going to be waiting after I have completed them all. I guess I need to not get too discouraged already because this is just the beginning!

In the end it will be all worth it. Relax..Breath just remember that once you are done you are done and will be a nurse...:nurse:

Yes thats what I have been trying to focus on! I know once I get there all my hard work will be pay off. Guess I just have a little problem with being impatient :p
