Nursing,2nd career choice and bit of disappointed

Nurses Men

Published

Hi there everyone,

Just graduated from a UK college, full registration and all but all I am offered in terms of nursing jobs is NH nursing.

I was top of my class and focused on the scientific basis of nursing. I am kind of disappointed seeing that none of my analytical are really used. All I am asked to do is change diapers and wash people's behinds. Enough is enough I say.

I am thinking about quitting the field all together, or maybe find the nursing area that doesn't involve washing and toileting people all day. All my respect for people doing it and caring and nursing for people in need.Really. But it's not for me.

What options do you think I have? Are there any?

And yes, I did think i do not need to do any ass cleaning cuz. there are plenty who can do that, including you it seems.

I think you should return to whatever you career you came from.

Good luck.

You really sound "suspect" to me, as if you really went to nursing school and are a new grad. if you exhibit the same arrogance that you show thru this forum, during your interviews, its no wonder you do not get hired in an acute care setting on a medical floor, especially in a specialty care unit.

what exactly is "suspect'' about me huh?

the fact that I dont like washing ppl's behinds?

get a grip! the rest of the world hates that too. you seem suspect to me liking that!

I think you should return to whatever you career you came from.

Good luck.

and I think you should do exactly what you do now. it seems they need your ass whipping skills big time!

nobody can deny, that we all @ one time or another has had to deal with pt.'s bodily functions. having said that, is just part of nursing, unless you decide to enter the world of management, and even then from time to time we are expose to these basic nursing skills. therefore, you should consider or, or opc ( out patient clinics) or visiting nurse, for example: nurses that work with an insurance co. you go in and draw some labs, take the v.s. etc. lastly, the only way to avoid the basic nursing skills is by becoming a don. nursing has so many branches to offer, just do a little research, i have no doubt that you'll find your niche, best wishes in all of your future endeavors...ciao~

thank you gitano, i had the same ideas but i just needed some reassurance from professionals with more experience than me. thank you for the reply, i appreciate it.

Well after only a month a got the job that I wanted. I'm gonna a be a theater practitioner, thank God for that.

And now I realize why a lot of the ward nurses avoid this area. Because its hard, not necessarily in a physical way but in an intellectual way, you need to learn a lot and be on your toes all the time instead of sleeping your way through the shift.

Hello,

Just joined this site, and am finding it very intriguing, especially since it offers a forum for guys in nursing! I would agree with WhichWayIsUp in that Critical Care is a great field for male nurses. I work on a critical care unit. Although I get total care patients in my patient mix, which require assistance with toileting issues and bathing, I am able to utilize my critical thinking skills. So far, it has been challenging, but a great start...not ICU and not med-surg, just right.

Sorry to hear your options have been limited. I don't know what other positions are offered in the UK for nurses (and specifically males) outside the hospital setting, but have you looked into perhaps working for a private medical office? Perhaps this is no longer an issue? Good luck and hope things have turned around for you.

OR man.

It's like woodshop class of nursing. Power tools, stress, very methodical and structured. You follow a ton of rules and they usually are what they are, they aren't open for much interpretation. Always new instruments and techniques to keep you learning and the field interesting.
