Hello!

I am a student nurse that was offered a position in the NICU as a student nurse extern and I accepted ASAP. I have always been into NICU/OB. It has been my favorite course in nursing school and my favorite clinical round in the hospital has been Mother/Baby. I was offered an interview for the Mother/Baby unit at a major hospital and I am very much interested. If I could do both the NICU at one hospital and M/B at another, I would definitely do that! What I want to know is if there are other men here that are working in Mother/Baby, Postpartum, NICU. How is it being a man working in these units, especially it being a unit where you are caring for a woman (other than the NICU)? Have you dealt with any discrimination in the unit, got treated any differently? I am just curious, I know I should not be worrying too much about it but I am very curious to know. Thank you guys!

I am the only male staff nurse ( except for 1 day charge nurse) out of 300 RNs on the unit. I am unaware of any issues with co-workers or parents. I am not treated any different by my female co-workers except I tend to be able to "fly under the radar" when it comes to being the focus of co-worker drama (which is fine with me). Obviously, being a male nurse in NICU is different from OB/L&D and you will find a lot more resistance to being male in OB/L&D/ PP than I did in NICU.

If you strive to be the best nurse you can be, hopefully gender will be less of an issue.

Thank you! I would love to work in the NICU post-graduation. I really do not want my gender to be an issue, I understand their may be some patients that are uncomfortable with a male nurse. I am just hoping that it is not that common. Thank you for the response.
