When I was a Mom for the second time at age 22, I applied for a job (1982) at the County Nursing Home as a Nurses Aid, and I was hired within a week! Back in those days, we received our education and certification on the job! We attended classes DURING our shifts, and were paid for them! I worked for 2 County Nursing Homes. One was for the Elderly, the other was for severely disabled adults. I ended up leaving my 7-3:30 M-F Jobs to become a Home Health Care Aid full time for just one client. I worked in the field up until 1985. I went through a divorce and some hard times and ended up returning to Southern California (From Montana) in 1986. I was hired by a well known security company (I was going to go into law enforcement - Highway Patrol) where I worked very hard and earned fast promotions. By 1989, I was burning out in my job/profession (I put my cadet candidate for the Hwy Patrol on hold), I worked with the M.S. Society in San Diego as a Home Health Care Aid for Youth,..providing Respit Care. I ended up becoming addicted to alcohol and used drugs. It was a devastating time in my life, though in September 1991 I entered treatment and got clean!! By 1992, I decided to become educated and certified as an Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Counselor, and have worked in the field for almost 14 years. in 2005 I took a leave from full time employment to help my daughter raise her first born daughter. My daughter barely made it past 19 years old when she gave birth to my oldest grand daughter, who will be 12 years old this month! (May 2014). My daughter also had trouble with substances, and finally got clean over 4 years ago AND also went to school and works now as a counselor in an adolescent residential treatment facility for girls. She gave birth to her second daughter in July 2013, and I bb sit for her in the early mornings from 5 AM - 9 AM. I have recently decided that I want to get a degree, though I have not attended formal college!!! I received my education through a Vocational School I atteneded full time..8-4 M-F for a year, and then had practicum assignments, etc. I will be 54 in July!!! I have no desire to work in a Hospital with 20 & 30 something Nurses!! My desire is to work either in a Substance Abuse Treatment Program or as a Hospice Nurse. My age will be a benefit in these settings, so I am very very excited to begin an education in either Vocational Nursing or Practical Nursing. I joined this forum to get support and feedback!!
