I can't say I am surprised, about half the nurses I work with are that way. The rest of us are thrilled to have some help. Hopefully you will get a better trainer on your next shift.

At the prison I work at, agency used to get thrown to the wolves, less than a week of training but they started giving them about 4 wks for the last two groups because most people didn't stay long on so little training. Remember you are a nurse firs...

I have been in corrections for 10 months, starting as a new grad. It does seem overwhelming at first but I really like it. Just be prepared because it's a new experience every day and nothing in nursing school can prepare you for prison life.

Thanks for the input, I agree that we do it for other patients in LTC that can't swallow, why would it not be allowed somewhere else. Personally, I think some of the nurses who are using that as the excuse not to open them are just to lazy to open t...

I don't know about BOP but the CA prison I work at has tons of opportunity for OT for RN's including being ordered over whenever they deem fit but you also have to remember you get 3 furloughs a month. We don't actually get to take furlough Fridays ...

Not all capsules, just Gabapentin, we have an order to crush or open and float capsules from the bosses in Sacramento because to many guys are checking them and selling them.
We are having a debate about opening and floating capsules at the prison I work at in California. Sacramento has sent us a memo saying we are to open and float all Gaba capsules. Some LVN's refuse to do it because they say it is out of our scope of...

I have been at CDCR for a little over 2 months now and this was my first job as an LVN too. The best advice I can give you is to not be nervous. Nursing in the prison is different then in a hospital but its still nursing. The inmates yell and are ...

Katkonk, we don't use the term yard unless we are referring to the inmates being out in the yard at our facility. We call our medical units medical or TTA but mainly we call them by location. We have 3 almost separate facilities, North which is SNY...

Thanks! and yes I learned that they hate getting written up, I also learned that giving them a 128 first and then a 115 for the same offense gives them 3 more months on their time if I am really having a real problem with any of them. I am a fair p...
I just got my post assignment for my first LVN job in corrections. When I finally finish my training rotation, I will be working PCP line in our Special Needs Yard. Anybody have any tips on dealing with SNY inmates or anything from your experience t...

3000 + waiting list???? Where in CDCR are you? I work at CTF in Soledad and there is never enough nurses to cover shifts, LVN's or RN's. Every day since I started on 11/30, at least 1 LVN is ordered over and they seem to be super short on RN's too si...
