First let me say I love this most helpful site.

I will be entering a Med Surg. position soon, never practiced in this area, LTC nurse for over 10 years. I have a tendency to panic, panic inside, when things go wrong with patients. I am working on my response, by telling myself "intellect over emotion", ie to think the situation thru.

Any one else have any tips for this problem

The other question is, what is the hardest thing about Med.Surg?

Is it certain procedures? Is it organization? What is it?

I started working med/surg about 3 months ago. For me..the hardest thing so far has been everything OUTSIDE the pt's room. How to put things in correctly in the computers, what dr's expect what etc... I often hear time management...but I'm pretty good with that. I'm often done early...but it's frustrating for me to remember which dr's expect certain specifics.

exp...I&O....some dr's it's continuous- but we have a dr who expects accurate read outs at specific times..and will be upset if they're not in the chart when he looks. Or CPM machines..some dr's want it continuous- others so many hours per day.

Good luck though...I love it.
